AGM and Spring Meeting 2012

AGM_2012

This year's AGM was held at Essebourne Manor Hotel, just outside Hurstbourne Tarrant in the lovely countryside of Hampshire, on Sunday 15th April. 32 members attended with partners and friends with 17 cars in attendance making for a great display outside the hotel. The weather was kind, bright and sunny, if unseasonably chilly, and the day started with a fun run through the Wessex Downs organised by Paul Gregory, before meeting up with other attendees at the hotel for coffee.

At the AGM your committee reported that the Register remains in rude health with sound finances, membership up to an all time high of 430 in 2011, due primarily to an increase in US members, and a full programme of events organised for the coming year. The Elsie May trophy was awarded to Paul Wignall for his regular reporting on Giulietta rallying success in the 'letta, and the Chairman's award went to Frank van der Vecht for his stalwart support to the Register and attendance at events over many years. Members then adjourned to the bar and lunch.

As always this event provided a great opportunity for socialising, gossiping, meeting other members, lifting bonnets, sharing plans and discussing matters Giulietta, and a great opener to the season. Why not come along next year?

Photos of the event are available for members on the Members page.

EUROPEAN TOUR - Thursday 24th to Wednesday 30th May 2012

Another great event has been lined up for the 2012 tour. Two of the world’s great race tracks – Spa in Belgium and the Nurburgring – are just 60 miles apart, set in the wooded hillsides that span the region.

The tour will be based around the second Spa Classic race meeting on the Saturday and Sunday, crossing the Channel on Thursday morning and travelling through the Ardennes on Friday to our hotel near Spa for the next four nights, the Ferme Libert, where we stayed in 2006.

Racing at Spa is a great experience and the programme includes the Tropheo Nastro Rosso for pre-66 Italian Sports & GTs which will include Ferrari 250 and 275 Berlinettas, Alfa SZ and TZ and Maserati 300S and Birdcage. We are organising dedicated parking at the circuit and there will be a myriad of other classics on display. You can spend the days watching the action, or visiting the local region and its capital, Liege.

On the Monday, we will make a day trip to the Nurburgring through the Eifel mountains then spend the next two days touring through southern Belgium and Luxembourg, before returning to UK

Mileage will be about 750, so there will be plenty of time to stop and enjoy the route. Indicative pricing is £375 per person, including dinner on 5 of the 6 nights, plus the Channel crossing.

SUMMER MEETING AND PICNIC - Shelsley Walsh - Sunday 29th July 2012

GIULIETTAS ON THE HILL

Following a very successful meeting there in 2010 we are returning to Shelsley Walsh www.shelsley-walsh.co.uk for our Summer Event . As an added attraction there will be Giuliettas and Giulias competing on the hill for Register Awards at the 2012 event. Club members can also enjoy a free picnic box for themselves and one guest. It is essential you book with This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you want a picnic.

The competition class will be open to all types of 750 and 101 series Giulietta and Giulia (and we hope to include TZs as well). The cars do not have to be race-prepared and, with a few simple additions, road equipped cars can be used. You do not need to be a member of The Midland Automobile Club nor do you need experience of hill climbing. It will be suitable for all levels; from those who want to have a go up a famous hill at a very historic venue, to a flat-out blast to win for the serious contenders (there will be class prizes!). You will need at least a Non Race National B licence from the MSA, which costs £41 (any race licence covers the event) a helmet and overalls etc..

If you've done any competition, or fancy having a go in a low stress environment and would like to compete with either a road, race or rally prepared car, please let Paul Wignall at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  know.

Competing or not, come to Shelsley Walsh and meet all your Giulietta friends old and new.

AUTUMN TOUR - Thursday 11th  to Sunday 14th October 2012

After last October's extremely successful Three Counties Tour, Paul Wignall has put together a tour based in Lincolnshire. Why you may ask, but Paul reckons that Lincolnshire has empty roads, great places to go and see, and judging by the last two events Paul and Jayne have organised you won't be disappointed.

For those travelling from afar there is the opportunity to stay locally near Rutland Water on the Wednesday night , otherwise the tour starts on Thursday 11th at the Lincolnshire Aviation Centre where they have their own Lancaster bomber which is due to be fired up at 1:30, all four Merlins,  a magnificent sight and sound. Then its on to visit the RAF Memorial Flight before settling into our hotel for the next two nights which was the officers' mess for the Damn Busters Squadron in WW2.

Friday includes an opportunity to drive around the circuit at Cadwell Park and Saturday a visit to Lincoln with its magnificent cathedral. On Sunday we visit Geoff Hamilton's garden at Barnsdale before a final sumptious Wignall lunch at Stamford before heading our seperate ways.

If you would like to come on this tour please contact  Paul Wignall at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Space is limited to 40 people so don't delay!

THREE COUNTIES TOUR 2011

Thursday 6th to Sunday 9th October 2011

3_counties_13_counties_2

After the success of last years' Yorkshire Dales Tour, Paul Wignall bravely agreed again to organise this years' Autumn tour in the unspoilt Three Counties countryside nestling in the west of England on the Welsh borders. This proved to be one of our most popular UK events ever with 22 cars and 43 members, partners and friends attending.

Based at the Cottage in the Wood hotel in Malvern Wells, the tour made forays into the surrounding countryside, starting with a visit to Shelsey Walsh hill climb and the Morgan factory on the Thursday. On Friday the tour made a south westerly run to the book town of Hay on Wye and  Monaughty House, an amazing unrestored Elizabethan mansion near Presteigne on the Welsh border. The group toured northwards on Saturday to Ludlow and the birthplace of the industrial revolution at Ironbridge and finished on Sunday with a nostalgic ride on the Severn Valley Steam Railway to Bridgnorth.

The weather was kind, the roads were made for touring and as always Paul chose some great pubs for lunch. Our thanks to Paul and Jayne for another splendid event. What next? Rumour is it could be to Lincolnshire and the home of BRM and the Lancaster but watch this space.

Photos of the event are available for Register members to view on the new Members page of this website details of which given in the September 'letta.

Summer Meeting and Picnic

Sunday 17th July 2011

Picnic_2011_1Picnic_2011_2

Our summer meeting and picnic this year was held at National Alfa Day, courtesy of AROC, at Basildon Park near Reading. Unfortunately the weather in the early morning was pretty awful and this put off a number of would be attendees, particularly Spider owners with inadequate weather gear! Nevertheless 13 cars braved it to the event, 7 Spiders, 4 Sprints, Peter Yaxley’s Ti and Hugo Moss’s SS. Bart Baljon’s lovely early lightweight Sprint had pride of place in the main AROC display at the front of the House and Paul Wignall was on hand in the trade area with his spares business but without Giulietta.

The weather managed to brighten late morning and more or less held through the afternoon. Kate Gregory again provided a splendid picnic lunch for all attendees, thanks Kate, and the winners of the informal concours were announced by Paul Gregory as Tony Ives (Best Spider), Paul Morris (Best Modified Car), Peter Yaxley (Best Other Model i.e. not a Sprint or Spider) and overall winner Salvatore for Best Restoration with his super Sprint Veloce.

There were lots of other lovely Alfas to admire, and a visit to the house and garden proved worthwhile with its interesting family history. All in all a good day out, spoiled a bit by the weather which was awful again on the way home, at least for me!

Camino de Santiago Giulietta Tour 2011

Tuesday 21st - Tuesday 28th June 2011

spain01

spain_seaSpain_cathedralSpain_group

This year we went somewhere different for our European tour, the north west corner of Spain known as the Green Spain because of its verdant countryside. Another first was that the tour was organised locally by STS, a Spanish travel company specialising in classic car tours run by Raul Aranda a Register member and Regis de Nicolas another Alfista of long standing.

8 Giuliettas, 6 Spiders and 2 Sprints, made the ferry trip to Santander to be met by Raul, Regis and their friend Michael Galy driving an SS and 2 Duettos. A quick blast through the Picos de Europa mountains took us to our first overnight stop and there followed 5 glorious days of touring through this beautiful part of Spain. Our route took us inland following the Camino de Santiago, the ancient pilgrim’s way to Santiago de Campostella, where the disciple St James is buried, and returning along the northern coastline. A final detour through the magnificent Picos on the last day took us back to Santander and the ferry home. The weather was fine, if a bit too hot at times, the cars ran well with no major breakdowns, food and drink was consumed with the usual enthusiasm, and of course the company was excellent.

Thanks go to Richard Hampton for organising another successful tour and to STS whose arrangements were excellent, very thorough and professional, and also very nice people. They can be highly recommended so look them up if you would like to tour with your car in Spain, at www.spaininatwoseater.com .

The tour will be covered in full in the next edition of the Giuliettaletta due out at the end of September. Look out too for preliminary details of next year’s tour in the December issue. See you next year?
